"LOOK AT ME NOW"

Makeup by Aisha Salim — Artist Statement [EXCERPT]

For my anthology piece, I decided to do something that hit home for me. This anthology is all about my past childhood, which was a dark time for me. I was a victim of bullying. In middle school, kids used to make fun of me, calling me names such as “loser,” “ugly,” and “Dollarama shoes.” I didn’t look like their standards. I didn’t fit into the “she’s so trendy” group, and I was brutally teased and traumatized. I was devastated for most of my younger days up until high school—that’s where I realized that I was my own demon. Beauty lies within, and we are all beautiful human beings, not just by what we wear or how we look.

My project is in three scenes, the first one is a representation of what I always wanted to look like: my self-image of that girl wanting to fit in with the popular kids. The second scene is the demon releasing in me, with all my feelings and emotions. The last scene is all about the glam and glory of my present and future self-being. The message that I want to send through my piece is for all kids and teenagers who are being bullied. There is a bright light at the end of your dark tunnel, if you want it. WE DON’T HAVE TO MAKE THEM WIN. We need to stand up to bullies and show them who we are and our self-worth.
