Meet Anicia Pierre Samuel (she/her)
Anicia Pierre Samuel (she/her), also known as ANISPi, is an emerging filmmaker and photographer exploring visual storytelling. While she is currently studying Behavioural Science, Anicia discovered her passion for the arts later in life as a form of creative escape. She didn’t grow up envisioning a future in the arts, but the workshops and community she found at the Flaunt-It program (the first and only art-based education she willingly took) opened her eyes to the possibilities of artistic expression.
Anicia's background outside of the arts brings a unique lens to her storytelling, blending critical thinking with visual creativity. Despite early barriers to accessing the arts, Anicia is committed to carving her own space and uplifting other diverse youth to believe in art as a viable future.
Her work centres around themes of identity, representation, and inference, often aiming to challenge stereotypes through visual storytelling. She recently completed a project using non-linear narrative techniques, inspired by her desire to get viewers thinking deeply. Currently, Anicia is gaining hands-on experience in different film roles to broaden her skills, with a long-term goal of creating her own projects and mentoring others. In ten years, she hopes to be both an established filmmaker and a physiotherapist, combining healing and the arts to support her community in multifaceted ways.
"Loud Silence"
Film by Anicia Pierre Samuel — Artist Statement [EXCERPT]
What began as a distraction during my gap year quickly became a powerful outlet that helped me connect with the world. The creative medium I focused on through this incubator was primarily filmmaking, using visual storytelling to explore ideas and emotions that are often left unsaid. In my short film, “Loud Silence,” I used minimal dialogue to show how the pressure to fit in can distort one’s identity. The main character, a reflection of myself, barely speaks, relying instead on expression and movement. Through my work, I aim to connect with others in different ways—this time, not through loud words, but through quiet moments that speak volumes.
I am the inspiration behind this project. Growing up, I felt the need to fit in, and because of that, I often belittled myself to lift others up. Even now, I still feel the effects this had. Through my film, I wanted not only to empower myself to take up space and use my voice, but also to spread awareness and help viewers understand how important it is to use their own voice. In addition to raising awareness about the importance of using your voice, I also want others to know that it’s possible to build a career in the arts. I love how one single clip can be used in so many creative ways. As I continue on my journey, I hope to offer services to diverse youth, helping them explore creative paths and discover careers in the arts while giving back to the community in a meaningful way.
