Meet Latoya Asante-Ebare (she/her)

Latoya Asante-Ebare (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist whose main art forms are music, photography, film, and writing. She was born and raised in the Finch area. Latoya has successfully completed graphic design and photography courses in school and taken art classes at The Robinson Place. Latoya has recently been furthering her artistic education at Flaunt It Movement. Latoya discovered that she was an artist when she joined Flaunt-It.

Latoya's earliest and fondest memory of the arts is when her 3rd grade teacher put on a Bob Ross film. In 8th grade, she began taking her crafts seriously. Today, she continues to paint and doodle regularly, along with practicing her other artistic mediums. Latoya’s creative work often reflects themes of self-expression and growth, capturing everyday moments from a unique perspective.

She is currently focused on building her skills across different mediums, especially improving her photography and learning more about editing and visual storytelling through video. In the future, she hopes to develop a strong creative brand, perform her own music, and share her art with a wider audience—whether that’s through exhibitions, online platforms, or collaborations. Her biggest goal is to turn her creativity into a career that inspires others to express themselves too.

"Nsoromma"

Song and Video by Latoya Asante-Ebare — Artist Statement [EXCERPT]

The art forms I practice are singing, writing, photography, and film. I pursue these art forms because they allow me to turn my emotions, good or bad, into art. There's the saying that “if life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and I always try to turn lemons into lemonade. My bad emotions are the lemons, and the art I create using hard and sometimes bad emotions is the lemonade. My piece titled “Nsoromma” shows the relationship I have with the sun, as well as the relationship between the sun and ancient African societies. The things that inspired me to create this piece were my culture and life experiences.

The purpose of my piece is to appreciate the impact the sun has had on my life and to educate others on the impact of the sun on African cultures. I hope people are able to relate to me and understand the peace that the sun is able to bring during dark times. I want the viewers of my video to relate and take away peace.
