Meet Angelique G. Dancel (She/her)

Angelique Dancel (she/her) is a multidisciplinary performing artist. She is an R&B singer-songwriter and a hip-hop based dancer. She is currently a Creative Industries student at TMU, specializing in the Music and Fashion industry.

At a young age, Angelique knew the stage was where she belonged. She started performing in live shows when she was 9 years old, singing, acting, and dancing.

At 16, she wrote the first song that made her realize the magnitude of her abilities. Growing up, she didn’t see much representation she could relate to in the main media she was consuming and in spaces she was part of. This encouraged her to be that representation she couldn’t find as a young woman of colour.

Today, Angelique is an established artist in Toronto's music and dance scenes. In 2019, she was selected as an opener for Anne Curtis and recently performed at the Living Room Concert Series at Stackt Market. Her dance portfolio is extensive: she competes with the UHHU dance team, which recently won 1st place at the Reach Dance Competition, and she is also an accomplished background dancer. Most recently, she has danced for Toronto artists Katrina Anastasia, Jada Hope at The Remix Project, and 4sante. She is currently in the process of recording and releasing new music for her debut as an artist. She is anticipating a release date for “Precious Time” in mid-September!

EP Project with Teaser by Angelique Dancel — Artist Statement [EXCERPT]

The music I write has always been a reflection of the inner workings of my heart. Every song that I write is a journal entry in my book! Love, a.d. is an ongoing EP project that consists of 3 songs, “Supermodel Figures”, “Precious Time”, and “Unlove You.” These songs were written in 3 years and highlight the growth and reflection that occurred within myself. “Precious Time” will be my first single as an artist. The songs “Supermodel Figures” and “Precious Time” are filmed as a live performance with the band Conatus in the middle of a park.

Writing music and performing has always brought me so much joy, especially when I do it for myself. Going into this project, I felt like I was diving head first. I have always planned and thoroughly thought about the execution of my music; it was just a matter of actually doing it. Once the opportunity to bring this project to life presented itself, the momentum of it all carried the project through. With any art form, one can only hope that their piece evokes self-reflection, resonance, and feeling. Writing music is the way I do that best. Throughout the production process, I have learned that growth and healing are not always linear; they are processes that everyone goes through and will always be different to individuals. With these songs, I hope listeners will acknowledge that although we come from different walks of life, we still feel the same emotions. Allow yourself to feel and sit in them, even if the experience can get a little uncomfortable.
